[Restaurant Review] Gueleguetza

By Anna Eriksson, Mid-City Press Restaurant Reviewer

Open all day late into the evening seven days a week, nurse Guelaguetza makes me happy and full.

For years this big Mexican restaurant has been doing it right: cheerful staff, malady warm colorful atmosphere, elbows on the table crowd, live music, never a wait and “Authentica Comida Oaxaquena” authentic Oaxacan food!

Their Mole Negro over a Clayuda with string cheese, proves too tempting for me, so I order that every time I go. It’s huge so I share it with the table—and I can’t help sneaking more of that mole sauce because it’s so complex and satisfying.

The Quesedilla with Huitlacoche surprised me. I didn’t expect a truffle that grows on corn would be that lovely.

Their whole fresh fish selection is served fried to perfection. The Mojarra was lightly crisp on the outside and delicate but firm fleshed. Don’t pass it up!

The perfect end to any meal is their Arroz de Leche, a sweet rice dessert flavored with cinnamon.

The whole menu is available “to go” and free valet parking makes pick up convenient.

Breakfasts like Huevos Rancheros will start your day off right or a lunch of three Oaxacan meat selections plus Oaxaca-imported string cheese. Served with a side of rice, black beans and salad will fight off the afternoon hungries.

Or at night, grab your friends, sip a margarita, tap your foot to lively music, and order tons of food. It’s affordable and delicious.
